i'm about to reinstall my OS because i really screwed things up, and this time i was looking into using ACHI because i heard it improved performance...is this true?
what is the difference between setting my BIOS to AHCI vs IDE? what are the advantages and disadvantages of using AHCI? also my BIOS allows me to set SATA ports1-4 and 5-6 differently, except i only have 5 onboard SATA ports? this is for my sig rig

AHCI allows for Native Command Queing and Hot Swapping, if your drives allow it. Most SATA drives can be hot swapped, but not all of them have NAQ as a function.
Therefore, if your drives allow for NAQ, then you might see a marginal performance gain. If they don't then the only reason to use AHCI is for hot swapping, which may not matter to you at all.

Most of the time AHCI will improve system performance. You can check out this great AHCI vs IDE test if you want specifics. This about sums it up..... Quote:

NCQ does not improve desktop performance. A single users HD access pattern is still too linear for the added overhead.

Okay, Duckie, I should have put the word MIGHT in bold and italics... that was the general point I think I was trying to make, though. However, there is still the benefit of hot swapping, assuming that the OP needs to do this for some reason, right? I mean, lets say you have several different media drives...?
