I installed Vista on a WD Black 640 HDD a few weeks ago when I built my system.
In my bios my Storage option was set to Raid. My Boot sequence was CD>WD Black I got my SSD yesterday, put it in my comp and installed vista on it only to realize I had the bios on Raid instead of IDE. So I changed the bios to IDE, deleted and formatted the SSD then re-installed vista. So now I have Vista installed on the WD Black and on the SSD. After I installed and updating everything I went into bios to change my boot disk from the WD Black to the SSD and when it went to boot it said I needed to select a correct boot disk. I changed it back to the WD Black and here is what is does. Bios flashes on screen>screen comes up with the option to select which vista I want to boot up(2 options)>2 seconds later it self selects the top option>boots vista from my SSD. So whether or not this is a real problem idk. However, I'm afraid if I delete and reformat my WD Black in the future I won't be able to boot up. Everything works fine, but I would like to know that If I disconnected my WD Black that I would still be able to boot. Does anyone know why I'm having this problem?

Yes you should be able to boot just fine w/o the WD
There is an app that will remove the Vista selection when you boot up.

When I get home from work I will run that app, unplug my WD and see if I can still boot.

Well the app will delete the selection screen. You will no longer have an option to select one or the other. But the app will DELETE the other option that you do not want to load. It will NOT delete the actual Vista install just the option to select one or the other. I will be back and edit when I find a link.
This will do it. Once installed go to Add/Remove entries. There you will need to know which one you want to delete. You will need to have both drives in I believe but am not totally sure. Now again like I said this will NOT delete the Windows install just the selection choice.

No, I did not clear the cmos; I didn't realize this could happen. I will most likely do what you suggest and disconnect my WD then re-install Vista on he ssd

I do not think you will need to reinstall at all. Just leave the drives installed and delete the one you do not want to use. I just did it cause I had 3 OS's to choose and I only want to boot from 2 of them. So yeah it worked out great.

I had something similar happen. I installed on a RAID with a 3rd storage drive connected. When I disconnected the storage drive, the PC wouldnt boot. I figured the boot loader was installed to the 3rd storage drive somehow. So I disconnected the storage drive and reinstalled the OS to the RAID. That fixed my problem.
