Default Need an opinion between these 3:

Building a rig for my bro, and since he wants instant speeds / load times, i told him wait till ssd's come down in price and for now get one of the following:

WD 640GB Caviar Black
WD 750GB Caviar Black
WD 1TB Caviar Black

the thing is, they are all around the same price.. but i remember hearing when i did my research for my rig below was that the 640gb are actually the fastest? is this true, or are all 3 the same in terms of windows app speed.

also, while waiting for ssd, if he still wants instant, should he get a vraptor for now? or is the vraptor not noticeably faster than a regular caviar black?

last thing, if you know a new 640gb-1tb drive that is faster than the caviar blacks let me know!!!

Thanks!

Samsung F3 1TB will beat WD 1TB and be a little cheaper

Edit : 640Gb will feel the fastest most likley, due to the lowest response time

They are all about the same, might as well get the 1TB, and yes, a Vraptor will out perform any of those Caviar Blacks, noticeably.

OP, good plan; I'd just get the 1TB since it will just be used for storage once said SSD is acquired

i've heard there are newer drives for a lot less than a vraptor that are just as quick, is this true?

I know the 2TB's are just as fast if not a bit faster than the Vraps, but I think the Vraps still hold their own in smaller space categories (less than 1TB). Stick with Candy_Van's advice, pair the 1TB WD Black with that SSD you're planning on and you'll be golden.

Out of the 3 drives, the 1TB is slightly faster than the 640GB (334GB on 3 platters vs 320GB on 2 platters for the 640GB). But the Samsung F3 1TB would be faster than them all. If possible, get that.

I know it's just one review- but bit-tech are (IMO) one of the better, unbiased, and in-depth review sites out there.
Bit tech review of Sammy F3
shows the F3 beating the VR on several tests (HDTach and FC-TestMP3/ISO) but lagging very slightly on Vista Bootup and Crysis load times (what they call "real world performance");
and performing "meh- not so well" on IOmeter.
From theirConclusion and Analysis...
Quote:
Once again Samsung has produced a simply superb hard disk drive, delivering fantastic sequential and real world performance and, to the undoubted chagrin of the completion, has done so for a bargain price. At just £54.95 the F3 is simply fantastic value and despite proving itself the fastest 1TB+ drive on the market is still £10 cheaper than Seagate’s competing 1TB 7200.12 and £15 cheaper than the Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black. 6p/GB and industry leading performance - you just can’t argue with that...
Unfortunately, I don't think it's available in CA just yet (at least I couldn't find it @ NE.ca or NCIX
Cheers & GL

[Edit] BTW the F3 is on 2x 500GB platters
