Default Its time to upgrade HDD's

Ok I am on a budget but my poor old WD 160GB 7200rpm 16mb cache sata is getting a bit long in the tooth.(I picked it up in late 06) I am looking for something in the $110 or less catagory. Size really doesn't matter as I am currently using 62gb of my 160gb drive. This is purely for a gaming rig, and I want to do well on load times/PCmark06/PCmarkVantage.

One question I have is, is how does the 150gb velociraptor do vs the 150gb raptor X(they are both 10k rpm and 16mb cache). Is there something faster than them? Where should I go?(lets not talk about raid at this point, its just something I don't want to deal with at this point, also have read its not the best in AMD rigs)

Here is what I am currently running

Also have one of these floating around if you guys think its worth while.

Seems the 150gb is out of your price range at $170

I would think twice about the raid setup, performance will be better and hd size will be greater for less money...

As for the old Raptor X compared to the VelociRaptor, well here are the differences that I know of:

The Raptor X only supports the 1.5 Gb per second SATA connection while the VelociRaptor supports the 3.0 Gb per second. But I don't know if this makes a difference.

The Raptor X's average seek time is 4.6ms while the VelociRaptor is faster with 4.2ms.

The Raptor X's average write time is 5.2ms while the VelociRaptor is faster with 4.7ms.

The average latency is the same for both at 3ms.

But from what I've seen here on OCN, the Raptor X is slower than the VelociRaptor in real-world performance. However, I don't know from personal experience. However, I do love my VelociRaptor!!

I would definately recommend the Western Digital Black 640GB.It runs great for me.Would fit your budget.Never had a problem with it.Very fast and reliable.Did a test with HD Tune and get the following results.

Any questions just pm me

I would be looking at a used raptor/velociraptor. I have read into the raid drivers and such on AMD and they are not anywhere near as fast as they are on intel chipsets.

I really don't know much about hd tune and what I am looking for on it. Would the 640 black be close in speed to a raptor/velociraptor ???

Here's a screenshot I took of one of my VelociRaptor's results in HD Tune:

This not a current screenshot, but I am comparing it to the Black. Notice how similar the transfer rate is even though the seek time is pretty different.

Those two drives should be about the same in performance, especially when comparing to the performance difference in a regular 7200 RPM SATA drive to the VelociRaptor.

Worse yet though is that's a Seagate. On top of that, it's a 7200.11 drive. The 500 GB 7200.11 drives were the ones that had that big firmware problem. So for me, Seagate is no longer a company I recommend. They kinda lost my trust with that whole firmware debacle. But up until then, I always felt that Seagate was the best.
