Is there an advantage or disadvantage to using a small or large hard drive to run my operating system? Should I use a separate drive for all my data?

well im happy with my caviar black, if you want speed then go with a SSD and put only the OS and some games on it,
you can also get two HDDs and go RAID0 or you can get a large HDD and shortstroke it, make it only read half its size for better performance

My configuration is a 64GB G.SKILL Falcon SSD for my operating system and all installed programs. But for my Documents ("My Documents"), the Desktop, Setup Files, driver setup files, my Backups folder which helps me quickly set Windows back up after a reformat, and all miscellaneous files goes on my VelociRaptor, which is my D: drive. So basically, I can reformat right now and be back up and running where I left off in just a few hours. My Backups folder contains everything I need as well as a few screenshots and helpful .txt files I made which make it even easier to set Windows back up. I filled this Backups folder manually. I didn't use any software.
I fell in love with this configuration back when I had Windows 98. I wanted a safe place for everything while reformatting, but all I had were CD-Rs. So, I used a few CD-Rs only to find that the file attributes for ALL of those files became Read-Only!! That was incredibly annoying. So then I came up with the solution of using a 2nd hard drive instead, and the rest is history.

my thoughts exactly....I was thinking about getting a faster smaller drive for the OS and use the 500GB for storage and backup

i recently ditched my 4 15k rpm SAS drives (36.7GB each) with a perc5i for an intel G2.
Quite simply put.. my opinion is an Intel SSD for os/apps and a platter drive for data. (what im doing now.) and i absolutely love it!

Right on. And y'know, I'm looking forward to the day when I can replace my HDD (storage drive) with an SSD. I mean, when my motherboard goes through the POST with only my SSD connected (no HDD connected), it is MUCH faster! So, my goal is to go 100% SSD. And I hope that we are one day able to replace our optical drives with something equally fast.
