The best and IMO easiest way would be to simply plug both drives in and copy the files over. You usually only clone stuff when you're copying an entire operating system over, or are creating a RAID1 setup, neither of which appears to apply here.

EDIT: In other words, unless there are special requirements, ctrl+c & ctrl+v usually is the best and easiest option.

If you have TWO DIFFERENT motherboards then a cloned hard drive will not work unless you manually load drivers for your NEW motherboard onto the hard drive image.

Not trying to be a jerk, but your writing was a bit unclear... I'm not actually sure if you have TWO motherboards, processors, hard drives, or whatever. Any route you go, Hirens Boot CD has all the tools you need to get it done.

If you are going from one motherboard to a different one then the best thing is to install a fresh copy of your os and load new mobo drivers and updates. Then plug your old drive up to the new system and grab your files off the old drive.

What they said. It's technically possible to use your old image if the new one uses the same chipsets, or you load all the drivers for your new MB, but it will never be as "clean" as a fresh install..

Can a person use something like Norton Ghost to copy an entire HD (including a functioning OS) from a smaller drive to a bigger drive? I just grabbed a 1TB drive and I'd like to get everything over from my 500GB without having to do a re-install.

Btw, not trying to hijack thread

That's precisely what Ghost was designed to do.

With the new drive installed, select the 500GB as the source disk, and the 1TB as the target, and let it run..

If you don't want to go for a paid retail route of Norton Ghost you might want to check out
Clonezilla, it worked pretty good for me. I've been using it to save images of my netbook to my flash drive
