That actually isn't that great. You are going for performance when you go RAID 0, yet look at those access times. They are horrible. 16ms is going to make opening programs seem pretty slow.

First, you should check that acoustic managment is not enabled on both drives.

If it is, set it at max performance level. Because you really need better access times for your system to feel "snappier".

The other thing is, you can get a more consistent transfer rate if you are willing to short stroke the other benefit is that your access times will go down.

Here is what my RAID 0 benches. 2xWD6400AAKS. I used the "Blue" drives, not the "Blacks".

To put the access time thing into perspective, my Western Digital 1TB Black drive, single drive not short stroked has an access time of 13ms. 16 is just WAY to high.

Well, HDtune Pro does it. There is also winAAM, but I think that only works on Windows XP. Hitachi feature tool used to have it but the recent iso's don't include it.

Check there first.

Yeah, if it seems slower it is probably that high access time. Access times are actually more important than transfer speeds when it comes to how fast your OS feels.

When I first installed my drives one of the WD drives had AAM set to the lowest, so my access times were over 16ms! I was pissed at first but did some research and found out about AAM. For me HDtune Pro saw it but wouldn't let me change it permanently. I had to boot into an old XP install and use winAAM. Finally set it to 254 or whatever is best performance and the access times went down to 12ms. Then I short stroked for even better access times.

No, that isn't the Pro version. You need to grab the Pro version. Either cough up the cash, maybe they have a trial, or think creatively about where you could get that program.

Great, I assume you adjusted the AAM settings? Those are much better access times.

Now reboot and see if those settings stick. They didn't for me, I had to use another program. Then we can talk about step two for even better performance.
