Ok, I have some old IDE drives and I currently have a firewire external enclosure for one of them. I was thinking about getting a few more for the other drives I have. Due to the speed limitations of IDE vs Sata, would it even be worth it to go with an e-sata enclosure, or would it be better to go with a firewire/USB one.

I don't think IDE enclosures can have e-SATA.

You sir are 100% correct! 2 completely different interface's, e-sata is nothing more than an external sata connector, that in turn use's a better shieled cable to connect to a sata drive.

so i should just get another few firewire ones for the best transfer speeds?

Sooner or later you'll probably want to use a SATA drive in the enclosure. I'd recommened getting something with IDE/SATA internal connections and USB/eSATA external connections. Check here and here. I always recommend an enclosure with a fan if you're going to be using it for hours at a time and would probably get this one. The reviews don't look so good but as usual, most of the problems are probably "operator error".

Your Firewire/eSATA external interface is faster than your drive so it doesn't really matter. Did that answer your question?

yes, so firewire is faster than IDE? But, I also don't want the speed to be less than that of IDE, because then it would be slower than IDE. Is USB slower than IDE? If so, it would just be best to stick with firewire.

Nope. It would go like this in terms of speed; IDE < USB < Firewire < eSATA.

![]() ![]() Transfer speeds for external are not the same as internal. I think it could be called overhead. If you believe USB transfers at rated speeds? I don't know where to start. I will bow out for know. But don't keep it up. Using IDE with a SATA? ![]()
