this is the other side of the mod that i was slightly expecting, would you mind sharing how this would kill the HD? i mean im not disagreeing i just want to fully understand how it would

Even microscopic debris between the head and platter will destroy either. You cannot open a hard-drive case without getting dust in there, even if you can't see it. A clean room has no dust and debris in the air.
You will note he did this on an old 1GB drive. ..a

If you really want a drive with a see-through top, look for WD's "Raptor X" drives.
