Default My hard drive plan

Right i have a WD caviar blue 500 gb and a 2tb Hitachi. The blue is for the OS and programs while the hitachi has all my files. My plan is to get a second 2 tb hitachi and raid 1 them on a perc 6i. I have a lot of photos that i dont want to lose again. Then move the blue to an external enclosure and copy the files there as well. Also have a seagate 400 gb thats been rmad so that two will go into the dual bay enclosure.

I'd like to have my OS and programs on a faster drive so was thinking about a either 146-147 gb SAS 10K RPM drive probably a 2.5in FF or a WD VR 150 gb. I found reviews comparing the VR with 15k rpm drives but didnt see anything comparing them to 10k rpm sas. Of these two, which would be the better choice?

thanks...

If you have data that absolutely can't be lost, get a safe deposit box at a bank and use two hard drives for rotating backups.

Connect one drive, back everything up to it, then take it to your bank box. Then connect your other drive and continue to do backups on it for a few weeks or a month (depending on how frequently you add/edit files). When your decided-upon interval is up, bring your 2nd drive to the bank and switch it out for the first drive.

V-Raps are pointless nowadays.

If you want fast, get an SSD. Period.

If you want space or cheap and fast, you have 2 options. Get a second hand SAS drive for cheap, and run it on your 6i. Otherwise get a 1TB Samsung F3 and short stroke it to 100GB - this will then be faster than the V-Rap yet significantly cheaper.

Generally a 10K SAS drive will be a little slower than a V-Rap for desktop use, as the firmwares are generally optimsed for server applications. But as they can be much cheaper (I bought 4 73GB 10K2s for less than $50 total shipped) you can get a few and RAID them to more than make up for the difference.

TBH I wouldn't bother with the PERC in your case - it just adds complexity. If all you want is RAID1 then onboard solutions are really just as good as add-in cards. Sell it and buy another external drive to back it up, or use the money to pay for web storage to have another copy of your important files.
