So my WD Black has been doing something really strange lately. It's making REALLY LOUD noises. Not like, clicking noises. Just really loud noises. It's like the humming of a fan, but it's a hard drive... Ya.
Is this a serious issue that I should be freaking out about? I recently disabled that one setting that makes the drive really quiet, so that could be it. Would it matter at all if I've been downloading tons of huge files lately (lots of Fallout 3 modding going on )?

So your saying it only has been making a loud sound when DLing? Is it making any sounds when say just surffing? If the sound persists or starts clicking you should back up and RMA.

****. :| EDIT OK so I rebooted, drive is quiet again now. Currently running a test on it with HD Tune, and Speed Fan is reporting the drive as fine. Post back with my results from HD Tune. Drive is still being loud as hell. Just randomly started making the noise again while browsing OCN. Currently installing WD Life Guard to get my serial number and setup an RMA with WD. Good thing the warranty is five years

![]() Screenshot of the analysis from Speed Fan. Maybe it has to do with the power on hours? Based on the screenshot, I'd say my drive isn't going bad SOON... But the emanating sound begs to differ. Is it possibly just because I have AAM disabled? Lots of reviews have said that this drive can be fairly loud.

had a problem like this with a really old computer, i don't think it effects the drives operation, it just keeps on working like normal.
If its really annoying just RMA it but if you can live with it it should be just as operational as other drives if it's the same as my one.

OK that sounds good
![]() I'm not too annoyed by it. I just don't really feel like having this drive die on me. That'd really just make me cry and throw my rig out the window... Also, has anyone tried the WD step up program? While wandering around the site, I found it. Looks like you can upgrade your current drive to a new one and pay a tiny amount of cash + shipping, get a new drive, and you get to KEEP your old drive you're stepping up from? Maybe I just read that wrong though. If I do get to keep this Black, I'm totally getting a new drive and adding some extra storage

Dilyn, I have two 640 blacks and two 500 blacks and i can't hear them at all. All i'm saying is if its that loud and is here and there....consider a RMA!
I have run hdtune on drives that made loud noises and hdtune would come back and say OK and the next day the drive would be dead.
