Some do, some don't.
I've got a cheapo caddy that requires a 5v power source, but equally I've got a WD Passpport and an Iomega drive that run fine off a single USB connection.

Newer ones do not.... since the HDD can run off of 2.5w now.
Older ones have a double USB plug... one for data/power and the other for just power. They provide 5w to the drive

It's not just the drive.
I have one 2.5" drive that runs off a single port on my sig rig and any of my laptops. It requires a dual-port cable to run off the front panel USB on two of my systems. It works off a require single port cable if I plug it into the back USB ports. ![]() What's happening is on those two systems, the front panel USB ports aren't able to provide enough power for a drive that is right on the edge of power requirements for a single USB port. Probably poor quality cable from the front panel to the MB header.. ..a

Honestly, if the price difference is minimal, I'd go with one already in an enclosure. I'm particularly impressed with the WD Passport enclosures.

WD has a 750GB but I'm not sure how well it will work with a single USB powered enclosure and may need a USB "Y" cable.

Wow... they've got a 1TB Scorpio Blue, too...
If you buy your own enclosure, you might need to check how tall the drives it accepts are. Many are the 'old' standard 9.5mm, while many of these high-capacity laptop drives are 12.5mm tall, so they don't fit.
