ran into some extra dough and figured ssds are the way to spend it. so with your guys' help i'd like to get choose some
![]() thoughts: -want to go intel as i've heard they've got the best ssd wise. -was thinking the x25-m at first but the x25-e would obviously be faster (as it's slc) right? would it be worth it to pick up one x25-e or a couple of x25-m - i've heard that putting ssds in RAID0 doesn't provide as big of a speed increase (compared to hdd's in RAID0) because of running into a wall of sorts on the controller end. uses: size obviously is a deciding factor on this, but probably mostly as an os drive with a few programs (per usual) with some backup storage drives for...storage speed/performance is probably the highest concern as long as it a) fits into the price range b) is enough to at least fit vista (although i am planning to upgrade to 7 fairly soon...) thanks, have at it

I think SSD's are great, *but* I don't think you should blow your entire budget on SSD. They are practical when you use them for OS and frequently used apps.
Get as much SSD as you need for OS and apps, and the use a couple of HD's in RAID for additional storage. You can event mount the storage as an additional volume on your boot (SSD) volume, so you're not messing with different drive letters. Use that for storage, and SSD for everything else. I see you have a 1TB green - use that for backup of the OS and storage volumes.. ..a

Buy an SSD but I wouldn't spend all of it on JUST hard drives.

How many gigabytes does Windows 7 Ultimate take up? Once I convert over to Win7 I'd like to try and do this also, but with having XP for so long and with so much other stuff on my PC, I haven't a clue as to how much the OS takes up anymore.

Check this out to see how SSD's scale with RAID 0: http://forums.extremeoverclocking.co...d.php?t=315206

Windows 7 Ultimate by itself (no 3rd-party apps) took less than 20GB of my other X25. Seems a lot smaller. ..a

There a few tweaks you can do to make the install file even smaller, like disabling hibernation. This will free up as many gigs of RAM as you have. So if you have 6 gigs of RAM, disabling hibernation will free up 6 gigs on your drive.

you guys are right,
clearly i should not spend all $1000 on hard drives. I just got excited finding out i had cut out $1000 from my original computer building plans and thought hard drives seemed to be the weakest part, i'll probably boost up the graphics card with some of the money as well. essentially i just want to say that the x25-E shouldn't be counted out for price reasons. so it looks like intel wise x25-M 80GB should be good if i'm not planning to store that much on it? (still tempted to go 160GB) but if the x25-E is a looot better than i'd probably need the 64GB version. concerning the comparison of these two, i recognize that SLC will be better-i've read a few benchmarks. I'm curious if you guys think the improvement is worth it? also @ hickeydog: it looks like the OCZ drives perform better (with the most notable advantage) in RAID? this seems contrary to what i'd heard previously...can someone explain?

__________________Sorry thats too funny.. I saw it in your sig and died laughing. Someone said that on newegg reviewing the razor mamba black mouse.. hahahaha As for your situation.. I dont really know too much about SSDs, but I wouldnt blow more than 400$ on them... if you want to blow some cash, spend 400$ on SSD(s) and 600$ on 2 5850s to add to your setup OR 2 possibly 3 more sapphire radeon hd 4890s.. Or a nice 24" monitor. That would be much nicer than having a humongous hard drive and you would still have a HUGE e-peen!!!
