one of my old 80gb HDD for my OS and my new 500gb for everything else, or should I just use my 500gb and make a separate partition for my OS?
Also, would it slow me down at all if I used a PATA HDD as my OS drive, or should I take apart my other computer and steal that HDD. (Both are 80gb, 7200 rpm drives). Thanks in advance for the feedback.

As it stands right now, it doesn't really matter. But if I was you, I'd try to stay SATA in case you want to go RAID in the future. SATA RAID is probably a little easier to manage, just from a cable standpoint. Just a thought.
So to answer your question. PATA shouldn't slow you down for a single drive. Also, the newer the drive the better. Unless it's a Hitachi or a Samsung or something like that.

80GB 7200RPM IDE Drive? In my experience - those are slow, comparatively. I have 8 WD800JB IDE HDDs that are collecting dust because they're too old and slow to run in single drive. I get a slight performance increase when I run them in RAID-0, but 8 drives in RAID-0, especially 8 old IDE drives in RAID-0, is too slow.
__________________I would probably go with the 500GB drive as your main drive, and then use the 80GB for minor functions. i.e. move your pagefile off of drive C onto the 80GB; use the 80GB as a "temp" drive for downloading or extracting files. i.e. if you have a bunch of RAR or ZIP files that you've downloaded, I'd download them to the 80GB, and then extract to a partition / volume on the 500GB drive. That way, you're reading from one drive and writing to another drive. Even with an old 80GB drive, it's probably faster than reading & writing on the same drive. Just my two cents.
