Default hard drive upgrade path, need advice

Well the title just about sums it up... in light of windows 7 and my planned transition to it (yes im finally ditching my xp) and going with a vista/7 dual boot vista being just for compatibility issues... i want to go ahead and upgrade my hard drive seeing as its getting a bit old and has been through quite a few reloads. My plan is to have:

1 wd caviar black 640 = os and apps drive for speed
1 or possibly 2 wd caviar green 1tb = storage and such and for quieter and low power consumption

ssds are kinda out of the equation for me atm due to price vs capacity issues

also based on this info should i go ahead and upgrade my psu too??

comments, advice, recommendations are welcome

thanks in advance ocn

I'd buy two Samsung F3 1Tb only, no other drives.

Create 200GBx2 Short stroked Raid 0 partition on first part of the two discs for your OS/Games/Apps, and then make the rest into an 800GB Raid 1 storage partition for data redundancy/backup.

Best of all worlds... major speed, quiet, large storage, and redundancy of cloned backup data.

edit: there is absolutely no reason to upgrade your PSU.

Short-stroke is basically making the first part of the drive only accessible to a set about of space. Doing this ensures the heads of the drive only travel a "short" distance. This increases the seek time as the heads only have a small distance to travel to get to the data required.

To setup RAID, you have to enable your SATA to RAID in the BIOS, once enabled you get a 2nd bios screen where to setup your RAID, normally CTRL+I.

As for setting up Vista / Win 7 Dual boot, I'd stick with just windows 7. There is very little incompatibility issues with windows 7 now.

Having Vista on just eats up a small amount of space, increases your boot time (as you have to select which OS to use.

I'd RAID 0 two Samsung 1TB F3's, set up the first partition for as big as you need it (OS / programs 100GB) then set the rest for 1.8TB for storage / games.

Hey guys, when you said RAID 0 for OS and RAID 1 for everything else. Is this like binary code so the computer understands that they are seperate?

I'm just making sure, I'd like to understand this Raid thing.

Wait you can make one partition Raid0 and other Raid1 on the same set of HDD's? I did not know this.
Edit: so how would that work if one Drive died? You lose your OS but the rest is still ok correct?
