Here are the Tomshardware charts for 2009 3.5" HDD write and read thoroughputs.

From what I can see, the Western Digital WD RE4 2TB seems to be taking the lead; followed closely by the Caviar Black.

The Samsung F3 betters them on the average though, and is cheaper.

You do raise a very valid points. Included links in original post.

So I guess the only factors the OP has to consider now (that is, IF they are looking at purchasing) is warranty and reliability...

I'm pretty sure either company would honor their warranties well. Samsung seems to have pretty good service regarding handling any problems with their drives, as WD has been along this path for a while. The problem is, we can't really directly compare the 500 gb drives, as the fastest Cavier Black drive seems to be unanimously the 640 gb, so we're comparing Samsung's 500 gb, single platter, to a double platter 640 gb drive. It seems rather uneven, and the Samsung seems to inherently have the advantage with the denser/fewer layered drive.

I've heard the Samsung 1TB's were faster than the blacks. Could be wrong though.
