Default I just slapped a Velociraptor into my system.

I see a noticeable difference but I'm not sure my transfer speeds are right. It copies at an average of 60MB/s but it seems to fluctuate too much. Is this right or do I need to enable something in bios to ensure I'm using the full speed?

WD3000 300GB drive.

I don't think you need to change anything in the BIOS but make sure nothing is accessing the hard drives during the benchmark test.

Software like AV scanners will use your hard drive which can interfere with the benchmark, make sure everything like that is closed and run it again.

Dooginater, Run your benchmarks several times and compare them also make sure nothing is running in the backround. But 60MB/s sounds about right

I pull more than 60MB/s with one drive, and it's no where near as fast as a raptor. I do 112-130mb/s in RAID 0, which is what I thought a 300GB raptor did.

File copy is not the same as sequential reads or writes.

A velociraptor can read at about 120-130MB/s, and write almost as fast, so 60MB/s is spot on for copying a file from one location to another on the same drive.

Oh, my bad.

60MB/s sounds pretty spot on then.

WD3000 300GB drive.
Western Digital used to ship 10k rpm drives with a jumper configuring it for Sata interface. In order to take advantage of Sata2, you had to manually change the jumper. The reason for this was that if it was configured for Sata2 and used on a Sata motherboard, the motherboard southbridge could be damaged. I'd doublecheck the jumper on the drive.

Edit: After looking closer, I don't see any jumper on the drive. Did it come shipped with a software disk? I remember having to do something to enable Sata300.

I believe you're thinking about the origional Raptors.

I don't recall my 150-300 VRs having jumpers and I still have an 80GB VR with no jumper.

PSSS...Hey sccr64472, you're right...check this out. I never got any jumpers with mine but it looks like you can jumper it for SATA1.

Well I did some testing and it seems my drive is writing and reading at about 100MB/s. That seems normal for this drive. I'm pretty sure the only way I can achieve those speeds is off the OS that's installed to it and when reading programs since my other drive isn't as fast.

I will say that I'll never have a slow OS drive again. This thing boots up in 30 seconds flat from the windows loading screen. I'm very happy. Does my speed seem right?
