Default External Drive , eSata, Hot Swap Question

Hi there,

Great to be back , haven't been overclocking that much these days but I live this kind forum ... ^^

I just bought a external Drive case (actually a docking station where you slide a HDD in from the top and it shows) . It has a eSata connection and USB connection. I put in a 3.5 inch drive and connected everything and started my windows. Drive is visible and accessible just fine.

Now what the hell is hot swap , ???

I wish to take out the drive and exchange it with another while in Windows.
However I took it out and back in , but Windows wasn't able to re-recognize the drive , why I don;t know and wish to know what my dumb ass is not understanding ^^

Thanks in advance

Ralph

You need to check that the on-board SATA controller that you are using on you MB actually supports hot-swap.

Google it. Someone on the ASUS support forum claims your motherboard does not support hot swapping, only hot plugging. I think that means you cannot change disks, but you can turn the external bay off and on with the same disk in it without problems.

Here, these folks claim to have it working.

My experience with both Gigabyte and Asus boards is that it is flaky at best, but I have no real need to hot-swap, so I just let it be.

I've read thru all the literature and it looks to me like hot plug and hotswap are close but with hot plugging you can't remove the drive without shutting down. I found that info here.

AAR, I have that chip on my MB and have no problems with hotswap.

Do you have the latest eSATA drivers installed?

Maybe it'll work and maybe it won't but at least install the latest drivers.

Now I'm curious about the specifics

Are you plugging in through USB or eSATA? I've found USB to be reliable across a broader cross-section of motherboards. Did you shut down the device before trying to put a new disk in?
