6800Ultra any one?

I'm betting the second power connector is only there for extreme overclockers who want to push the card to the max. As proof of that look at the GTO which has very similar specs but lower clock speeds and only 1 connector. I don't think upping the core speeds is gonna raise the power requirement enough to require another power connector.

You could be correct. Maybe when the card is at max power, it's overcoming the rated current handling capacity of the 3 12v lines. So they have a second connector to ensure the wires don't burst into flames under those circumstances.

Its more than just core speeds. More memory, wider bus, more shaders (and higher shader clocks) and higher memory clocks. Add that all up and it can make quite a difference. Not to mention the core and memory are probably running at a higher voltage on the GTX than on the GTS.

The 6800U had 2 connection slots, you didn't need both

This looks to be similar

That was more for ensuring stability, as drawing too much current over a single 12V wire will cause the voltage to drop, as sending too much current over a wire will cause it to act like a resistor. Thats why a PCIe plug has 3 12V wires and why it is limited to carrying 150W by the PCIe/ATX spec.

This looks to do the same thing, Nvidia did after all recommend a 450w PSU for the 8800GTX
