Does this mean at 1280 res that i might aswel just go for the 256mb version? Or will later games use all 512mb even at 1280?

I would avoid any 256MB version. Textures in games keep getting larger and larger, and the video memory will be beneficial.

Is the 256MB version really worth it over the 512mb? I can pick up an XFX 256mb 8800GT for under £120. Where-as the 512mb version is around £170. Would I really need the extra video memory since I only run at 1280x1024 (may be getting a new monitor in the future though).

Yes, according to rivatuner, when I max out crysis with 2 AA @ 1024x768, it uses up almost 500mb of vram, so yes it will be beneficial to get the 512mb version. Even call of duty 4 maxed out uses around 400.

Most games at high resolutions like 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 will quickly overwhelm your 256MB of video memory.
