Yea the 7900vs1800/1900 was a battle I mean Nvidia was selling the Ultra for what 800 dollars at a point, that tells you how the well the competitors where doing I find that the 3870 is competitive with the 8800GTS and the 8800GT because its cheaper.

GDDR5 isnt needed for a while GDDR3 is fine for maybe 6-12 more months.

I think it is for the better, i mean really. Now driver updates are monthly, always increase performance and they just don't plain old SUCK like they used to. The marketing strategy is better and they are taking in the "less power consumption and heat output while increasing performance" view point from the CPU market.

Looks like we got ourselves an upset ATI/AMD fanboy here. Face it, ATI screwed up with the 2900. None of ATI's cards can touch the 8800GTX, let alone the Ultra.
Its roughly the same if its CF vs SLI, but almost no-one is going to do that.

And the new 3870 with 4 in CF will kick two GTX's around the block, or two GT's, or it should anyway.

I am not a fanboy, I have a Core 2 Duo E8300 and Pentium Dual Core E2180 as well as the CPU in my sig rig, I also have multiple nVidia cards (6800GS, 9400GT, 9600GT) as well as two ATI. (HD4890 + HD2400Pro)
Using my backup rig for nostalgia factor.

Driver updates have always been monthly, and have always increased performance. And they never sucked for cards like the X1900XT (I know because I own one) or the X1950XTX. They did suck for the X1950XT until recently, as well as for the 2900XT. The 2900XT can end up close to 8800GTX or as slow as half the speed due to driver issues with certain games. So no, there really hasn't been much improvement with the drivers, and the 2900's case, actually went downhill.

ATI also had better strategies before AMD bought them. When nVidia took the lead from the 9700, ATI was quick to respond with the 9800. When ATI had problems with the X800XT yields, they quickly came out with the X850XT. And when the X1800XT launched, the X1900XT and XTX were right behind it. This time, ATI had no contingency plan for the 2900.

AMD estimated Quadfire's scalability as being the power of *3.2 1 cards power.
