The Wii is currently sitting at about 19.54M units worldwide. Xbox360 has over 16 million sold (early holiday reports are putting it in the neighborhood of 17 million). The PS3 is sitting at 8.92 million units sold.

Understand that I am a Nintendo man all the way and I love my Wii (and DS Lite, thanks Santa) but the amount of negative reporting the PS3 had to endure during its first year makes me think the same people working for Hillary Clinton also work for Microsoft (go Obama!)

The folks at Sony have long said that they see the PS3 being around for the long haul. They look at the lifespan of the PS2 (launched in March 2000) and how it is still selling very well. Sony is looking at how the other video game console manufacturers give each system a four or five year lifespan and they are thinking ten years. Will this gamble pay off? Who knows but Sony is clearly basing the future on their past experience with the PS2

Theres a reason; Japan. Xbox appeals to NA, and Europe, PS3 and Wii Japan, NA, and Europe.

However, Sony fans, rejoice when the PS3 actually manages to catch up. Until then Sony is still the loser in this console war.

I don't think the surge in PS3 sales is a surprise to anyone. Everyone with half a brain knew that it was just overpriced before, and that once the price dropped to a price point proven acceptable to gamers that they would start shifting units. And it should be no surprise that $400 turned out tobe that acceptable price point...it was already proven out with the X360, and is in fact the launch price point (in current dollars) for most of the successful game consoles throughout history.

That said, I don't think there is going to be any sustained momentum in the PS3 "catching up" to the X360. I do believe it was a surge, prompted by a tidal wave of people that wanted a PS3 but were waiting for the price drop, combined with Xmas. I imagine that a lot of those people have their PS3 now, and that sales will trend downward a little over the next few months. The PS3's game library is still much weaker than the X360s, and it is still more expensive, after all.

I always tend to think about the gaming side of things however, and the elephant in the room definitely is the eventual domination of the Blu-Ray movie format. It's quite possible that I am not taking enough account of people that might buy a PS3 as a Blu-Ray player now. Three months ago I would have thought that the idea of these types of purchases skewing the overall numbers was silly; but now that the format war seems to be tilting heavily towards Blu-Ray, it's not so crazy to me anymore. But if PS3 sales fact do not decline, because of Blu-Ray or whatever other reason, I would expect Microsoft to counter with another price drop. A $300 X360 with its big gaming library would be hard to overlook next to a $400 PS3, Blu-Ray player or not.

Edit: I forgot to add this point. There is no way that the PS3 can be a 10-year machine any more than the PS2 can be a 10-year machine, at least not the way the author implied. Microsoft will release a new console in a few years that will look so much better than the X360 and PS3, that Sony will have to match them. It's just basic competition. The PS3 may continue to exist, but it won't be their main product any more than the PS2 is their main product a year into the PS3's life.

^ Once games in 2008 start rolling out for the PS3, there is bound to be another surge. But, like you said, I doubt there will be a major surge to let the PS3 play some "catch-up", never "surpass".

Though - if you think about it overall, the extra $100 is worth it because you're getting more then just a gaming console. Remember, it costs an extra $100 to get an external HD-DVD drive for the 360.

I loved my PS3 it was quiet and Love my Xbox 360 even more. This might sound stupid but I hate the PS3 controllers, to lite, no forcefeedback and no removable battery. No games also kills it for me.

Dualshock3 is out in Japan, and will be in NA soon. Why would you want a removable battery? I hate them, both for the Wii and the 360, I like it being integrated, it can still be replaced if necessary, but it's performance is far superior to the 2 AA in a wii-mote, and frankly I find the 360 controller to be a beast of burden when size is considered (this coming from someone who has about 40g of added weight in his G5).

Those are facts, yes, but the article is talking about trend based on comparative time on the market.
