I'm so used to using a keyboard that I hope they don't force me to use a mouse. Relearning how to do things is annoying when the old way you did it is embedded in your memory and is now a habit!

Listen to duckie, EFI just allows you have a GUI because the code they use is more complex, which is actually a good thing. The best part I think about it is that it takes much less time to write code for it I believe, and it should take less time to get fixes out to people. Plus I think it is almost like C++ or something along those lines, so more people would be able program them, hell I bet some of you guys could tweak your own BIOS.

I dont mind a change...people seem to act as though a little bigger BIOS is going to take away from your 3dmark06 score or your Crysis frames....

this looks really nice, and I dont care about the GUI as long as I can have those integrated drivers :P

I was just thinking about this at school as a way to speed up boot time without switching to Vista (which does boot faster than XP)

As long as MSI can get BIOS and firmware updates to me faster, sign me up.

I can't see motherboard companies having drivers in there which will be redundant when Microsoft changes the code structure of the OS so I guess so

The advantage of EFI is that MS can change all the code they want. The drivers are still the same. The motherboard companies don't provide the drivers. They just provide the EFI framework. The drivers themselves are still written by the same people as before.

The advantages of EFI are (http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles...0951165.html):
1) Faster development and bug checking
2) Smaller BIOS to shorten boot times
3) Offers full legacy support
4) Eliminates VGA dependency
5) Can be used with any Intel architecture.
6) BIOS size can exceed 1MB
7) Reduce device conflicts
8) One driver will work in multiple OS including 32/64-bit
9) Highly configurable. It does not even need to load the full OS to make the PC usable.

http://www.uefi.org/about/
Quote:
Q: What is the BIOS? What does it do?
A: The BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program originally conceived to get a PC started after power-on. The BIOS also manages pre-boot data flow between the computer's operating system and attached devices such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, and mouse. When the BIOS starts up your computer, it first determines whether all of the attachments are in place and operational and then it loads the operating system (or key parts of it) into the computer's memory from local storage (floppy, hard disk, CD-ROM, USB) or network.

Q: How does UEFI differ from BIOS?
A: The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) served as the OS-firmware interface for the original PC-XT and PC-AT computers. This interface has been expanded over the years as the "PC clone" market has grown, but was never fully modernized as the market grew. UEFI defines a similar OS-firmware interface, known as "boot services" and "runtime services", but is not specific to any processor architecture. BIOS is specific to the Intel x86 processor architecture, as it relies on the 16-bit "real mode" interface supported by x86 processors.

Q: Does UEFI completely replace a PC BIOS?
A: No. While UEFI uses a different interface for "boot services" and "runtime services", some platform firmware must perform the functions BIOS uses for system configuration (a.k.a. "Power On Self Test" or "POST") and Setup. UEFI does not specify how POST & Setup are implemented.

Q: How is UEFI implemented on a computer system?
A: UEFI is an interface. It can be implemented on top of a traditional BIOS (in which case it supplants the traditional "INT" entry points into BIOS) or on top of non-BIOS implementations.
Basically, a very simple BIOS still has to remain. Just so the motherboard can post and initialize keyboard. Then EFI would take over.
