Very handy to trouble shoot problems or fix HD's.

For example; Once I power on the system and get the efi prompt I can run limited unix/linux/dos commands. I can mount drives, search drives, copy and replace files, install software updates (from local files or network), reconfigure the kernel, reorganize boot priorities and even ping systems on the network.

EDIT: Oh and BTW, this functionality has been on sgi (and other) systems since the late 80's (or even earlier). It was just not called efi.
airbozo, any idea why consumer PC adoption is virtually non-existent?

I was told it was because of a couple of reasons. First it was developed for systems using the Itanium processors, The initial cost was too high, and just like the 640mb barrier, and other legacy issues, most vendors did not want to kill the backwards compatibility of their systems for functionality that was not really needed. It is just logical that the next place for efi to end up is on our desktops.*

This is a PDF document covering the efi shell commands;

EDIT: *Just like I expect NUMA architecture to eventually trickle down the the desktop market. We just don't need that kind of memory technology. Yet.
