Default [VR-zone] MSI to use EFI BIOS on new P35-Neo3

Looks nice
Quote:

Computer is a fast developing thing, but PC BIOS isn’t. From ancient 386 to modern quad core PC, the Mainstream PC BIOS looks the same, the only difference is more adjustments can be done with today’s BIOS. That’s not enough, we knew BIOS with beautiful UI have been developed for a long time but because of the production cost, no company will bring this kind of “next gen” BIOS to US.

ASUS’P5E3 ASUS Express Gate show us some features of the next gen BIOS, But now MSI announces that they will use EFI BIOS on their upcoming mobos, the first one is a new P35-Neo3.

EFI is an upgraded BIOS specification as created by Intel. Different from nowadays BIOS, EFI BIOS runs at 32 or 64bit. EFI BIOS have a more friendly user interface, and it allows for hardware drivers to remain in the firmware and operate independently of operating system. So it means users in EFI BIOS can use mouse, CD-Rom and more hardwares.

P35-Neo3 with EFI BIOS will hit the market in February.

Who the heck cares if a bios screen looks good. You'd need a bios chip with a larger amount of ram to store a gui like that. = more expensive bios chips which in turn means more expensive mobo's?

I don't want my BIOS ridden with buggy GUI's and other gimmicks. BIOS is for function, not to sparkle in your eyes. These PC gamer want everything to be flashy and gimmicky, makes me so sad.

A 16mbit chip is so expensive
They can just choose not to put this tech into inexpensive budget mobos.

Actually... it's not a gimmick and is less buggy than current BIOS. It allows for more flexibility. The nicer GUI is just a side benefit. The BIOS as we know it is a bit of software/config file that dates back over two decades. There is a lot of legacy features and workarounds in it. I believe one issue is that there is a hard limit on the BIOS file size. There was an article in CPU magazine on EFI about a year ago.

EFI allows for faster boots.... and more importantly, device drivers that are independent of OS. That means you can load drivers with EFI and not worry about the OS driver compatibility.

A BIOS with a GUI has to be bigger than what floppy can hold, right?

Forcing people to get rid of their floppy ways... Ironic that I just recently removed mine in a redesign of my case innards.

As long as it's stable and bug free. Many have enough problems with traditional BIOS as is (looking at you ASUS ).

I do not think a fancy GUI is needed but it does look nice and PRO.
