but tri sli doesn't give you 3 times the performance. It would be cheaper to buy 2 gtx's than 3 9800GTs...

GPU innovation is slowing down, partly due to the lack of competition, and partly due to the incredibly high costs. What we are seeing here is very similar to Intel's "tick-tock" strategy, where they operate on a three-year cycle with an eighteen-month "tick" (new architecture) and an eighteen-month "tock" (die shrink or minor improvement, but large drop in cost). So while we may not be too excited about the 9-series, budget buyers sure will. Because bluntly speaking, until GPU's move into the 45nm and lower size range, we're not going to see that many more improvements.

Hmmmm, this isn't good, obviously since the the 8800gtx already does tri-sli, you can't say the entire 9 series will suck since the 9800 gtx will have to be more of an improvement than this. I am starting to feel like the 9800 gtx will be the same as my G92 GTS, just with some unlocked shaders and probably this tri-sli chip.

This makes me not what to buy a 9000 series vid card, hopefully the ATI 4000 series is everything it is rumored to me, I might just switch to the Red Tide for my mid-summer build.

Yea, I agree that its a whole market thing. But I mean, Nvidia has been on top soaking in tons of bounty for over a year. They promised use in april of '07 a more powerful successor core to the G80 in November of '07. Its 3 months later, and now they're telling us all we have to work with is the G92, a MID-RANGE core. I was excited when the 8800GT kicked so much arse cause I thought it was a precursor to a monster G90 core. This is all dissapointment on my end.

Did Nvidia feel do dandy about the G80 that they didn't develop anything new in the past 15 months?

Shame on them.
