I actually believe quite the oposite... Better optimization should win over raw power. Sadly ATI's approach is pumping core and memory higher and higher while Nvidia has taken the root of less core more optimization.

If someone saw the specs of the 9600 GT they would laugh. Its minimal to say the least! Yet it performs better or equal to the "power beast" HD3870! (clock wise and memory wise its the highest out there if i'm not mistaken)

Why cant we all stop guessing and just wait.

Nvidia are not going to release a new flagship card which wont impress us.....

And my guess on the strategies of both companies is as follows:

AMD/ATI: Must be efficient...Must be efficient....Must be efficient....

Nvidia: POWER!!! GRRRR!!!! MORE POWER....... MUST DESTROY!!!!! MUHAHAHHAA POWER!

So, no doubt the 9600GT performs well, and comparing it to a 3870, they are about even...

One thing however, why did they only do two benchmarks for 9600GT SLI vs. 3870 X2? Thats not thorough at all, and doesnt hold credibility...

9600gt sli vs other cards

better review
as for expreview i can still recall their CF vs SLI scalability review and how untrue it turned out to be.
9600GT vs 9600GT sli
the last increase is 107.5%!! what a piece of BS.

ATI is known to release relatively powerful cards ith absolutely crap drivers for at least half a year.. their cards get alot better once their drivers mature. ATI tends to go rather quickly with introducing new cards. just look at the specs of their cards, all clocks are higher than nvidia's offerings, but performance is mediocre at best until optimizations are made in later driver releases

Nvidia on the other hand.. goes all out with a release of a new series of cards (complete with drivers and all - with the exception of the 9 series). nvidia takes alot longer to release new cards

each has its shortpoints :P

Look, ever since the 7950 GX2 we have all been eager to see another nVidia dual-GPU. It's right around the corner, and both GPUs are on a single PCB.

We also remember how awesome that card was (during its short like before the X1950XTX killed it), and seeing this 9800 GX2, I have to say that we shouldn't jump to conclusions before it is released. Better drivers, excellent manufacturers building them (eVGA, I love you), and the crazy overclock-ability.

Sure, we are seeing the same G92 core being beefed up, but what's so wrong with that? If it works, use it.

bah. spend slightly more and SLI two 8800GT's or GTS's.

If I'm using SLI, I'm not using an overpriced bottom end card like the 9600GT... not when 8800GS outperforms is for less money.

The 9800GX2 uses the G92-450 "variant", which as far as I know isn't used in anything else.
