I have been thinking about going for a 8600GT. I had a 6600, 7600, and now an 8600. But is it worth it? Or should I finally jump up to a 9800?

jump straight to the 9600.

I owned a 8600GTS, and they are absolute pants.

No. Get the 8800GS at the least. Here's a page on nVidia.com to show you that when you move from the 8600GTS to the 8800GS, the Texture Fill rate more than doubles. Click here, and scroll down to see for yourself. Then click here to see further comparisons for the whole GeForce Family from the 7600 to the 9600. It's interesting to note that the 8800 is pretty far ahead of the 9600.

Then go to this page on NewEgg and shop.

Gotta love how they just rename their products sometimes. Another year of high-end life for my 8800GTXs.

From a 8600GT I can imagine a 8800GT should be a great upgrade. The 9600GT cheated in benchmarks with the PCI-E bus trick. In reality the 8800GT is a much more solid card.
