Default [ExpRev] Follow-up to NVIDIA’s shady trick on 9600GT

Quote:
GeForce 9600GT is released on Feb 21, 2008. The card’s good performance per watt and performance per dollar really fascinated us. But after we read TPU’s NVIDIA’s shady trick to boost the GeForce 9600GT, we think we really should take a look inside.

Surf around the Internet for several hours, we find people around the world all discussing this matters. People focus on these questions:

♦nForce mobo will automatically start LinkBoost?
♦9600GT runs better when we use NVIDIA mobo?
♦9600GT’s GPU clock rise when PCIe clock frequency rise?
♦Other GeForce also have this issue?

Interesting find.

Quote:
So, other cards’ performance did not affect by PCIe. For now only 9600GT have this issue. But will it be the only one? no. We ran a test with a 9500GT ES, the issue is the same, the card gain performance when we increase the PCIe clock.Maybe it is a new feature NVIDIA just did not want us know about it.
Interesting indeed...

Seems that nVidia is trying to boost performance any way it can. If that means that it will run faster on nVidia board then.....

Sigh... Nearly every thread I read with expreview as a source has some fool questioning it's validity due to "poor grammar."

Poor grammar is annoying, go figure.

This isn't shady at all, it's just Nvidia looking to maximize the output of the card. Most GPUs don't scale with the PCI bus, so they found a way to take advantage of the extra data transfer. More power to them. On the other hand, they didn't want to throw the card out there with that as a "feature", because then everyone would say "Ooh, they gave us an 8600 with a feature and called it a new GPU."

The 9600gt is a good product. Too bad the 9800's increasingly look like they won't continue the value proposition. It's a nic bonus that Nvidia's new feature is most effective on their own chipsets, since Nvidia chipsets are set up to run a higher PCIE bus speed, isn't it?

Good marketing, good product improvement, why complain?
