Good job Amazon, I still don't see this stupid law holding up in a higher court.

Same here but I think this is something worth really worrying about. I already pay a voluntary tax for Internet purchases every year.
The pols in Albany are a greedy lot. Their solution to every problem is more money. That's piss poor management, laziness, and plain 'ol stupidity. Jerks. I care about this because I'm a resident of the state. lol, I just made myself mad. ![]()

Well, local municipalities are losing money due to out of state purchases. As much as I hate paying taxes and would like to see this shot down, I don't blame them for trying. I run a parts and accessories department at a MC shop and you would be amazed at how many times I have people ask me to ship items to them (if shipped out of state, no sales tax) or wholesale shops buy things for personal use. All to avoid tax.

This will not help anything. Why are politicians so stupid? If you understand that for every action there is an equal, & opposite reaction this makes no sense.
__________________Economics dictates that this won't do a damn thing in the end. Sure the immediate result is increased sales tax revenue for NY, but this increase in taxes will only be counteracted. In the end NY will lose any and all revenue gained in one way or another. Believe me I could write a ridiculously long post explaining this, but who would read it?

Because the consumers in NY are having to pay these taxes and their discretional income does not change, you potentially loose tax from other purchases they would have made. Deeper down the rabbit hole you have the fact that Amazon & other online retailers has to comply with this law, which increases overhead. This will lower their profits, decreasing the corporate tax they pay, although they pay these taxes to Wash. & the Fed. Gov't not NY, it will still effect NY because Wash. & the Fed. Gov't have to cover the lost tax revenue. Wash. might pass a similar law to NY, the Fed. Gov't could raise taxes or reduce discretionary spending, both of which hurt NY. Amazon could even raise prices, or reduce overhead to regain profits. Reducing overhead is going to get back to NY eventually, whether Amazon cuts pay, downsizes, buys more from overseas, outsources jobs overseas, ect. All of these will reduce someone's tax revenues which have to be recovered through other means or reduce discretionary spending. The only way that you won't come about fairly quickly is if Fed. & State Gov't's operate in a deficit as opposed to recovering lost tax revenue or decreasing discretionary spending. This just delays the cost temporarily. The problem is Gov't thinks we need it, while the inverse is more true, it needs us. The Gov't is dependent on the success of the economy, and we are it's wheels. If we don't have money to spend & save the Gov't as we know it will cease to exist. Just look at the 3rd world where poverty is predominant, the Gov't has no power or control. (I think if the DHS reads this I'll end up on some terrorist watch list, if i'm not already! Thank you "Patriot" act!)

Note that if you make an out-of-state purchase you are REQUIRED to report this when you file your income taxes, and you'll have to pay an excise tax.
Now, nobody ever does this ![]() NY has no legal standing imo.
