Crossing the bridge between NetBurst’s swansong chips and several generations of Core 2, the LGA775 socket has had a good innings. However,t the word is that Intel’s forthcoming P45 chipset will be the last chipset to support the socket.

This won’t be a huge surprise to those of you who’ve seen the leaked pictures of Intel’s forthcoming Nehalem CPUs, but an anonymous source at a leading motherboard manufacturer told Custom PC that Intel’s shift to a new socket is likely to make P45 a very popular chipset.

‘The P45 Chipset is so important for motherboard manufacturers,’ they said, as ‘it’s probably the last LGA775 Intel chipset.’ According to our source, this means that the chipset will have a very long lifespan, with a huge share of the chipset market. Our source also said that, as a result, the company was putting more effort into the design, BIOS and components of its new P45 board than with any previous boards for a long time.

Although it was originally ridiculed for swapping CPU pins for pads, Intel’s LGA775 socket has had a remarkable lifespan of several years, especially when you consider that AMD has gone from Socket 939, through AM2 and now AM2+ in a similar timeframe.

It was logical conclusion.
After all Nehalem, because has integrated memory controller, should have new socket. And in a year or less ,there will be Nehalem in public...

It makes sense with Nehalem coming along. The LGA775 socket have PLENTY of good chips to make use of it. I will betcha this board will probably be selling 4-5+ years from now.

Unless i decide to go SLI for some crazy reason, this ASUS Maximus formula X38 board i have now, will be my last LGA775 motherboard...

P45 motherboards will still hold a huge part of the market, it Intel goes ahead with its idea of having the non-extreme Nehalem chips not overclockable...

Wow...uhh I thought nehalem would be 775. I needa pay more attention. Didn't netburst last a lot longer than this though? I'm dissappointed by this.

Intel has said that it would bring a new socket longgggg ago.

However, as usual, loads of people will be moaning about having to upgrade.

The LGA775 has lasted extremely long, an unprecedented longevity. Maybe it's just me coming from AMD but I think it's amazing.

The high end Nehalem socket has 1366 contacts, they have future proofed it with contacts they do not yet need. It should last for quite a while.

With nearly every function of the northbridge integrated onto the die, how do you expect it to use LGA775?

I can't wait 'till people start putting their maximus' up for sale =D.

I need a new (used) board to get this Q6600 up to snuff. This should drive people's older boards down in price.
