I can see this turning into the gas/electric company as well. Where they "estimate" usage. just another thing that you'll have to monitor to make sure that they aren't ripping you off. (and to think, I always laughed at the older people who still think TV should be free. I guess that'll be me in 30 years, "I remember when you paid one monthly fee and could DL all you wanted...")

What you are failing to understand is basic economics. If they keep the price at $50 a month, and there's that person that only uses it to check e-mail a few times a week, they are making MAJOR money over the bandwidth that they are NOT using. So figure that the majority of people (75%) only use 75GB of bandwidth in a month, they are making money and having additional bandwidth available. Now, that additional 25% are using 300GB a month, that's 50GB over the cap, so that's the $60 + overusage charges, when the bandwidth being used was nothing more than they already had. No need to install new pipes or anything else, just the top 25% using what the bottom 75% DIDN'T use.

Nothing like making money on something that is already there. Way to go Comcast!!

God, I hope Verizon or AT&T brings fiber service to the Chicago area soon. I hate Comcast.

Back when they first showed up, there was a huge ad campaign to try and stop them from taking over the Chicagoland services - I didn't see why it would matter, and didn't really care. I can see why people hate them after experiencing their wonderful service.

The government will never let this happen as long as botnets are running. Can you imagine your rig gets hijacked and starts mass mailing as well as ddos attacks. That would be a huge bill. This is in direct answer to companies like Blockbuster offering internet content. No longer will people need HBO, Showtime, MOD or any of that other crap. They will lose heavily on just these loses alone. I can see the MPAA getting a bit rankled about this as it could potentially and heavily cut their future profits and well we know what happens when that happens. Cable operators are just going to have to live with the fact that with HTPCs and the ever dropping price of good parts online content will win its just way way to convenient.

Lets hope the free market we have in the US will keep things competitive enough that it gets rooted out by competing companies slandering each other.

The problem with telecom companies is that there is no competition. They all have local monopolies.

QFT

I hate you ISPs, I really do.

I want my internets for one price. I used to live in Russia with 256kb down 128kb up with a 1gb cap.

That was bad. I don't want to worry about caps....

This report is from DSL Reports. It doesn't sound like the most un-bias of places to get news regarding cable internet services to me...
