Default [TT] ASUS mobos will get instant-on Linux OS

Source

Quote:
The folks over at DeviceVM certainly have something to grin about – ASUS has just announced that it will include its Splashtop instant-on Linux OS software as part of its Express Gate feature on all upcoming motherboards starting with the P5Q family.

While Express Gate is not entirely new, it has seen some changes now. Instead of having to run the software off a HDD or pen drive (where you might as well just use Ubuntu), this time the boards will have a dedicated memory chipset linked to the BIOS. Turn on your system and within a second or so, you have an OS to play around with.

The type of setup is probably more suited to notebooks, but if you are only interested in web browsing, you could save a bucket of cash not having to pay for Vista or waste time setting up another Linux operating system, as it is there ready to go. The video below which was uploaded to YouTube below explains how Splashtop works.

This is a REALLY good idea. A ready to use Linux system with an Instant On feature. I can see myself buying one of these laptops just to get acquainted with Linux.

I am certainly down for this, rep+

Isn't this kind of retarded? Who turns their PC off anyways. Standby takes all of 2 seconds to come back from.

Well say you have a driver problem or some other problem with your OS, you could still boot to this and troubleshoot. In fact, come to think of it, this is an easy troubleshooting boot disk, access to your drives, internet connectivity, etc.!

How would this help unless you had pre-installed Linux compatible software. It's not like I can just boot up my normal firefox, I would need the Linux version.

Your right, but for the completely wrong reason.

The issue would be that the hardware would need tons more drivers, and access to read/write many different file systems. That would need a bigger flash memory storage device, and drive up costs.

This would be great for grabbing drivers, and that sort of thing.

One nice thing they could do is to add (in the future, ie version 3 or 4) is anti-virus software that can read/ write NTFS and other file systems. If you get a virus, boot into the Express Gate, update your definitions, and run a scan.

Ok, maybe I got ahead of myself, it's usefulness as a boot tool would depend on access to your hardrive, does anyone know what abilities this OS would have? If you can access your drives (hey, the mobo maker knows what drivers to use, they put in the controller chip, lol) and the file system, then your home free.

It is probably just the needed drivers, USB drivers for stuff, and basic drivers.

Then it would have Firefox, and some other light stuff.

As for other drives (like the ones hooked up) that is entirely up to Asus.
