Nice photochop, it has been proven that the HD4870 will have a 512bit bus.

That's the question.....in all likelyhood probably not, but it might be more efficient at things and not so complicated to write for.
That would be a plus for developers but as a developer myself i would use ATI. Simply because of how nVidia has refused to help F@H is a sure sign of how they will treat others in the future.

The memory bus on a graphics card is regarded seperately from the arcitecture of the GPU's core in the same way that the memory bus on a motherboard is regarded seperately from a CPU. The reason that newer cards currently have lower memory bus's than their predecessors is the fact that manufacturers are trying to minimise costs to keep the cards in an affordable price range.

No, the HD4870 current spec denotes that it has a 256-bit memory bus. The dual GPU HD4870X2 is scheduled to use two seperate 256-bit bus's. One for each GPU and it's respective set of memory.

Apart from minimising costs, GPU makers know exactly what's coming in the forseable future in terms of gaming titles and their requirements. It could be a possibility that anything more than 256Bit and 512MB VRAM is clearly not required.

A post i did yesterday highlighting memory usage between DX9 and DX10 showed that memory management in DX10 is far superior. Cutting memory requirements by nearly 50%.

From what I have read from multiple sources the regular HD4870 will use GDDR5 and have a 512bit bus. Why would they bottleneck their GDDR5 with a 256bit bus? That would make no sense and they would be better off with a 512bit bus and GDDR3.

256-bit 4-4.5GHz GDDR5 gives more then enough bandwidth.

those look like the stats of the 4850... from what has been posted before
from several sources... the 4870 was suppose to have gddr5 memory, with
a 512bit bus... some sources also include that the 4870 will have 1gb of memory.

It wont be running at 4GHZ though, AMD stated that they weren't able to clock it up that high. Even if it was that fast why would they waste the money with the new GDDR5 tech on the old 256bit bus when they could have very fast GDDR4 on a 512bit bus?

No ... they are using GDDR5 instead so they don't have to use a 512bit bus. 512bit bus's cost a ridiculous amount to manufacture, which is why AMD moved to using a narrower bus but much faster ram (4-4.5 ghz)

The 4870 will have 512mb
the 4870x2 will have 2x512 so basically 1gb
