Default ATI graphic cards going external

Bump it up.

Source

Quote:

It seems ATI is going external graphic cards, according to Fudzilla, ATI going to unveil a product “Lasso” accompanying its notebook platform “Puma”. No reports of the card’s connections but They say it is based on RV670 GPU.

Express card slots can be found on most of todays notebooks, and ASUS’s XG Station is also using the slot. Though the slot is PCIe, but its bandwidth have been limited to X1, so it will totally bottled RV670’s performance. Anyway the product is still in mist so let’s wait and see if they can choose another wise way.
This one is using a different GPU.

The 1x PCI-e bandwidth will probably stop it from being useful. Along with the increased latency of adding 3-6ft of wire when it usually has 6".

I don't think this will work any better than the graphics cards in notebooks, unless it's an integrated chip. I'll be sticking with my 16x PCI-e 8600GT.

hmmm you know how some laptops have 3 mini-pcie slots in it? like i know my xps m1530 has 3 mini-pcie slots on the bottom (2 are open since i dont have UWB usb and WWAN), couldn't they make some add on card to tap into the bandwidth provided by those slots too?

I see the device uses the Splendid system. Does that mean that you could use MXM graphics cards?

Vostro 1500 and Inspiron 1520 use the same casing, internals, keyboards, readers, touchpads, etc.

However, the 1500 is cheaper (usually), has the option for 1680x1050 screen (worth it 100%) and the 8600M GT, which is needed for any gaming.
