You know why this is pointless? Because games already have system requirements on the boxes! If the consumer is too stupid to make sure the system they buy is capable of playing the game(s) they want to play on it then they can wallow in their own wasted money-induced self pity.

Having "gaming ready" labels (or something similar) won't help matters since it still doesn't tell the consumer for which games the PC is "ready."

System requirements stated on boxes will not make sense or be understood by less tech savvy people. If a parent is buying a gift for their child, and the box states hardware requirements, how will they know if its ok or not for their home computer?

If this is something like the Intel Centrino move by Intel, where specific hardware are required to qualify to be named a Centrino platform, then having specific hardware to be named a Gaming platform could get the PC gaming back to where it belongs, to the TOP!

It says in the article that the minimum requirements that AMD set are an AMD 5600+ and a Radeon HD 3650 with their 770 chipset. No IGP anywhere.

It's the only way to do this, and it's already being done. As I explained earlier, having something labeled "gaming ready" is more misleading than helpful to those less tech-savvy people for obvious reasons. This will not help matters! Gaming requirements on boxes are extremely easy to transfer to what is in a PC you are going to purchase (or already own). If you can't read a box then you shouldn't be buying a computer.

I don't think Intel is the villan, I mean Dell and HP are responsible for not putting a graphics card into their system.

I do see how this is going to be a good idea for the less tech savvy people. The only problem I see is how they are going to be updating the rating system since new hardware comes out every month which would mean that new games are going to come out requiring that hardware.

I do not disagree with your opinion, in fact i will support you in the case that they go with the "Stick the label on and sell it" nature of things, but if they do hold up to their end of the deal and only approve systems like said above, with minimum specs for a processor and Gfx card, then yes, that would be good!

System requirements on the boxes generally are very vague....
For example:
2.5GHz or greater CPU
128MB Video Card
Shader Model 3.0 Supported Video Card

AMD is planning to publish benchmarks as well. This is a good thing for less savvy people. The only thing I would recommend to AMD is date their labels. They plan to update the system requirements every 6 months. They need to make labels that say "AMD Game: Winter 2008" or "AMD Game: Spring 2009". Otherwise, an "AMD Game" certified system sitting on the shelf for 2 years would be indistingishable from a current one.

Seconded (:, but I think that a yearly edition would be easier to manage and refer too, imo.

edit: so this year satisfying gaming rig costs ~$500
