Default [news.com] AMD sets new game PC specifications

Quote:
Advanced Micro Devices will try to make buying a game PC more like selecting a game console.

"AMD Game" will put badging on game PCs and set minimum standards for PCs that carry these badges. The idea is to allow gamers to select a PC like they would an Xbox 360 game console model and to drive home the point that an integrated graphics chip (from Intel, for example) is not good enough for a decent gaming experience.

AMD's specifications will target mainstream PC gamers, not high-end enthusiasts necessarily. Initially, the specifications will cover only desktops, with notebook standards coming later.

This is a clever move. Because they're a part of the gaming coalition (or whatever it's called), they can move to get these 'minimum' standards on the box of every new game to come out. Intel's own (blarg) graphics chipset will be made the villian.

This is foolish with a capital FUH.

The only people this will apply to are those that buy Dell's and HP's. AMD wastes more resources.

***EDIT***
I took this to mean that they are badging pre-built PC's similar to what Microsoft does with their Vista Ready stickers, not the actual game boxes.

Right, it'll likely end up on game and PC boxes. Novices may see a "make sure it's 'game ready' " on a game box they pick up at a store and then spot several PCs. The one's with the AMD IGP will cite "Game ready".

It better say "game ready" with a number next to it. If your game is equal to or lower than that number, you are golden!

Still a lame idea even if they do get their little recommendation put on the side of games. This simply seems like damage control to me.

This seems like a really good idea, it reminds me of how Vista gives a computer an "experience" score based on overall hardware performance.

One of the biggest problems I see with uninformed computer buyers is that they get basically ripped off by buying something they think is good that actually isnt, i.e. Intel EXTREME graphics, and then get a sour taste of computers in general from that experience.

I also think this is a great idea, now people who dont know very much about computers can go out and buy one which will play the ones they want.

Really good idea, cant wait to see how its implimented.

Off topic: I think it's called the Super Adventure Gaming Club.

On topic: Good move AMD! Hopefully these standards will stick.

you realize HP and Dell sell a lot of systems right? How is this AMD wasting resources? They're reinforcing their platform with the mainstream if anything. As long as it isn't some generic sticker, and something with a rating system as was mentioned, it makes sense.
