Default [TT] VIA Naked Pico Challenge begins

Source

Quote:
Stewart Haston over at VIA just sent us over a link in regards to their Naked Pico Challenge.

What is all this about you say? Last week VIA issued a challenge to readers asking how long they thought a VIA Pico-ITX board based on VX700 chipset would keep running without any cooling at all – not even a heatsink, naked if you will.

You can check out the video they uploaded to YouTube below to see all the action.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WET69ZaMx0&eurl

Visit this link to see how the system is standing up from VIA’s live web cam. I actually predict it will last for many months just fine. Where is my prize?

Oh man that guy put the whole thing into a 5.25" bay.... O.O

EDIT: Found an ARTiGO DIY for $300 ^_^ I'm thinking this would be really easy to mount on the back of a 22" LCD.

Yeah... but how many x86 CPUs in the last 5-8 years?

Yeah I thought these VIA eden cpu's were supposed to be able to operate with only passive cooling. My bet is it lasts 3-5 years

If all they are doing is running Ubuntu and looping a video 24/7, it should last indefinitely if it doesn't crash within the first hour, as long as the ambient temperature stays the same.

My roommate has one, kind of cool. He got it to run Nagios, and so when his main computer freezes due to an unstable overclock, he could restart it.

Actually the whole idea of the naked chip like this is cool, however its really a stupid marketing stunt, look at the video, the chip already throttled to the point of the video frame rate dropping to 2-3 FPS.

How does this chip compare to Intel's Atom?

Intel ran theirs with no heatsink, running Vista and unreal 2004, and it was supposedly at 35 C.
