Media Servers, Torrent Boxes etc.

You could couple one of this with an 8500GT PCI graphics card, and use it as a portable lan box for some counter strike or other older games...and even as a HTPC...

You can also get socket AM2 mini-itx for pretty cheap, so one of those with a 5000x2 and 8500GT PCI would be a great little lan rig...

thats true, I didn't think of that....

but, if you give it some more thought, whats the point in building an htpc if you ONLY storing stuff on it? you might as well save yourself $300 and just get another harddrive, or an external or something.

unless you run a 3 series ati card with some hardcore decoding on it, the processor wont be powerful enough to run any movies.

I don't know if an 8500gt would be able to cut it man, some people have trouble playing 1080p movies with Core 2s and 8800s

yeah, but then you wouldn't have an atom, which defeats the purpose doesn't it?

im all about putting servers in the wall, in between the dry wall, and wire the NIC port to a networking jack on the wall..

From the un-trained eye, it will look like a network plug, to access the LAN, but in reality, its the port to access your hidden sever...

I currently have a PC running in the wall, and was thinking about down sizing it. This seems like something to lean towards... Air flow inside a wall sucks so bad... just moving around the same air in the wall cavity... temps are OK, but only that. If i got a cooler CPU in there (atom based) then I'd have something!!

I'm using the card on a widescreen samsung monitor @1280x768 and this card is rock solid for games and more importantly HD movies (im using XP Promedia portalPowerDVD 7.2 ultra with the latest nvidia Purevideo HD software). 1080P BlurayHD DVD cpu utilisation is averaging between 30% & 35%. 8.5Gb x264 1080P recodes are averaging around 25% cpu usage. This obviously produces excellent video playback with no frames dropped or system sluggishness.

You're trying to tell me that an in-order Atom CPU comes even CLOSE to 35% of the performance of an overclocked E6420?

Madness.

Hmm..

CPU + Mobo = $83
2GB DDR2 = ~$30
mATX PSU = ~$30
14" LCD screen = ~$150
Keyboard and mouse = ~$50
8GB SSD = $150

Wondering where the extra $250+ is going to in the Eee PC = Priceless

Thats why this is good, its considerably cheaper, even buying retail than the $650 Eee PC 901.

I don't doubt that the celeron might beat it out in performance on a MHz-for-MHz basis, but celeron will savagely lose in power:MHz ratio...hence where the atom CPU is coming from and why it is appealing.

My 1.9Ghz Athlon XP can run a 720 HD movie without lag, and anything 1080 has some lag, Strangely enogugh, I think the Atom could, Ya know, be a tiny bit faster?

Yeah, but EEE PC features Celeron M @ 630Mhz (underclocked to consume less power). And this Atom is 1.6Ghz. I bet on the Atom.
