Your thinking in a case where you only have 1 pc acessing it. If you have 4-5 pc's on the network having all your media and photos etc on the server means anyone can acess anything at any time without having to have a certain pc on.

I've been seeing those at the local trading forum. Since the proc is comparable to a laptop proc, that heatsink could be considered good enough for it. I wish they'd release a trimmed down version of it without the extra I/O like PS/2, parallel, and serial (lol).

A good home server computer has low power consumption and large harddrive capacity. Small size and low noise is a plus. For me, the benefit is being able to leave the little bugger on 24/7 downloading stuff, FTP, saving backups, and possibly running personal web apps/streaming so the main 500W rig doesn't have to.

You're forgetting that the Eee PC doesn't come with a DVD drive (and where are you buying your dvd drives anyway? Last I checked they were under $30) and it doesn't come with fans. (The Atom doesn't even need a fan anyway)

And theres also the fact that I know they didn't pay close to $150 for their screen, and they aren't paying retail price, so I would really be shocked if the Eee PC cost more than $300 to make. Selling it at $650 is an insult to the consumers, especially since the Eee PC 901 technically costs less to make than the $550 Eee PC 900.

The Eee PC 700 at $400 is overpriced, they were supposed to be around $300, and Asus is going completely the wrong way with it. Its actually too small, but us consumers got around that by reasoning that its so cheap. All Asus has done was make components that were previously optional built in while literally doubling the price.

Look at it, what is the difference between the 4G surf with an 8gb SDHC and a 1gb ram upgrade and the 900? An extra 2" on the screen and $150. Can you honestly justify Asus's decision to charge as much as a decent 17" LCD for an extra .026 megapixels?

Exactly. This is something I've been wanting to do for some time.

I hope I can find a large heat sink to replace the stock one. Fanless is the way I want to go. Small fans make too much noise.

It would be nice for a router. Its actually cheaper than some of those Linksys ones.

Given the power consumption of the atom you could probably just unplug it

You'd need to buy networking cards though, which'd probably make it more expensive than a WRT54GL, which you can put custom (linux-based) firmware on anyway to do most stuff. It's not as powerful, obviously, but not bad.

Edit: Check the tags. Getting a little political.
