Its because you can't change the fan speed yet.

Most reviews state that's because the fan doesn't really ramp up when idling. And you mean to tell me the users here don't already have aftermarket cooling for their video cards?? The mounting holes are the same, my Accelero S1 should pop right on the 4850 with zero problems. Aside from that, price point is unclear at this time. The Asus and MSI cards on newegg have a $30 and $25 MIR respectively. With rebates this early, I imagine the price is going to drop somewhat fast.

Thanks (yeah, I know, I didn't read the whole article, but i am at work and can only browse OCN once in a while)
Not too bad, but I honestly think the ATI/nvidia tools are a joke. I would like to see them use RT oe something. Also, do they say what the improvement was after the OC on the 4850? They seem to give more details about the GTX+ once OCed, but not for the 4850.

Does everyone forget ATI sucks with their drivers at the begging. I remember 3870X2 when it came out it was getting beaten by 8800GTX in almost everything but now its not. 9800GTX has mature drivers now so not really a fair comparison. Also even though 4850 it has a crap cooler it has much more OC room then 9800GTX+ because all 9800GTX+ is a OC 9800GTX. Also 9800GTX is not competing with 9800GTX but with 8800GT/9600GT/8800GTS. 4870 is competing with 9800GTX.
Edit: Like i sad before in other threads i don't trust anything now.

Well, I'm assuming the fan is at 100% at load... 85c is very hot for stock
__________________![]() As far as aftermarket cooling goes, I figured the card would have a slightly different layout... Maybe not. Still doesn't make sense to ship it with this cooler.

Sure it does. It was probably cheaper. Gotta get to the sub $200 price point somehow. I would like to see some of the other companies coolers in the next few weeks.

85C isn't bad...that's what my HD3870 hit with the stock cooler. In fact, if you check reviews of the reference 3870, they all had mid-high 80's as the load temp. As long as it's within the thermal limitations of the hardware, what's the problem? These are the reference designs. They'll work just as they are, regardless of the cooler quality, it's sufficient.

85C is way too hot for a stock temperature IMO.

I really have to wonder why other reviews show very different numbers...
