Erm, over here the 9800GTX is at least £50 (~$100) more expensive than the HD4850. Perhaps the price cut hasn't taken effect over here yet, but I'd say the 4850 still has the upper hand in this battle of the polygon renderers.

Well of course it will get hotter. The more smaller the more hotter it is.

That's not necessarily true. The energy/heat density may increase, but the temperature wont necessarily be "hotter".

Everyone that is bashing the 4850 for insufficient cooling and being too hot.

Remember the 8800 GT when it first came out?

The price cut hasn't taken effect. Should in the next week or two. The prices should drop down to $200 to $229 I hear for the 9800GTX(+).

The price drop is already happening for the 9800GTX so you should not have long to wait over there hopefully.

Well I remember when the 8800GT came out, I bashed it for being too hot as well...

The card I want is the 4870, it might offer enough of a performance boost to warrant an upgrade, assuming I buy a 24" monitor by then.

4850; single slot cooler that dumps heat in case, lower clocks, lower stock V, GDDR3
4870; dual slot cooler that exhausts excess heat, higher clocks, higher stock V, GDDR5

IMHO the 4870 is worth the wait and the $100 premium, though 9800gtx+ has piqued my interest. It should be a monstrous folding GFX card(especially for the price).

WOW, that's crazy... If I bought a 9800GTX within the last month I'd be irate, Nvidia needs to offer an exchange program(EX, in July you send in your current 9800GTX and get a GTX+ at no added cost) since they completely blindsided everyone with the release of GTX+ and normal GTX price cuts.
