I wouldn't be so sure. Except for a few sales, Intel really has nothing to gain by supporting SLI and nothing to lose if they don't. Intel doesn't want Nvidia to sell more graphics cards because that would continue to give credibility to CUDA as a computing platform and allow Nvidia's GPUs to compete with Intels' CPUs. Sure AMD has their own GPGPU stuff going on, but Nvidia's way more aggressive and vocal about it so they're going to be a bigger perceived threat. The critical sucess of the HD4k series is even less of a reason to support SLI, because increased demand to CrossFire could mean that Intel sells more chipsets.

when nehalem comes out i suspect the rush will be like the core 2 launch all over again. and if nvidia can't sell chipsets to support all this happiness this wont hurt anyone but them.

Has it been confirmed that X58 will use ICH10R?
yep. they already use it on p45. X48 was the last chipset to use ICH9R

Well nothing is free @_@ so you could say they are competing on the cpu department but on the chipset department its a win/win situation for amd and intel.
