IMO AMD should have done this exact same thing with the AM2 processors...

An AM2 processor should have been made to work on a 939 platform, but function with DDR1. Many 939 users would love being able to get their hands on some AM2 chips.

It's good they learned from their mistakes.

They would have needed to come up with some kind of socket adapter complete with new cooling, and frankly I don't blame them. The AM2 socket was designed as a bridge to AM3 which was supposed to be the real performer, with AM2 and AM2+ something that they'd sell until they could actually compete with Intel. At least that always seemed to be the situation to me. Basically they had to switch gears and cut their losses.

All of that said I'm still leaning towards an Intel cpu for my next build, but I will give AMD a chance at my business and wait at least until both AM3 and Nehalem are out and have a good set of mobo's to choose from. So I will probably be still be using this rig for another full calendar year.
