2GiB actually seems fairly necissary, since I doubt both GPUs will be able to share information, and the settings the card will be used at will make more than 512MiB of texture space very necissary.

Vista uninstalled again..

I think this is basically two 1gb cards, but nice to see it happening, as 512 isn't quite enough.

Been hearing 2GB from a lot of sources now. Maybe they're all relying on the same leak.
Didn't the R700 PCB have eight chips per GPU, same as the 4870? Must be a fancier, denser GDDR5 chip then. Still, the codename, 2GB GDDR5.. Might as well get a 'Leonidas' name badge for your case when you put this thing in it.

It might be better to wait and crossfire two 4870 1GB cards.

hmm true.
but then again, ATI claims the R700 (4870X2) will perform around 15% better than Crossfire 4870's. although im guessing they were referring to the 512mb versions, since a 1gb version has not been announced.

They will share the frame buffer of one card. Effectively, 1GB. So if this 2GB rumor holds true, much less potential at high levels of AA/resolutions/geometry complexities.
OEMs will also slap on an extra charge for the double set of RAM chips too. I think in the end the R700 will be a much better deal.

256-bit memory interface = Eek!
so much for having 2Gb's of video mem why it can can only process 256mb at a time, what a waste
