well those seem to only be the MSI cards. None of the other partners have gotten the price drop message. And still, does 100$ really justify a 10% increase in performance?
F Nvidia. I'm going Red this time around. Helping out the little guy is actually good on the wallet AND good on the framerates this time around.

Obviously they can go lower still, but no way will they be able to match the price of the 4870. Even if they weren't losing money at that price, the demand would be too high for them to keep up with, so they'd either have to allow a shortage or raise prices back up. And if there's a shortage it means they could be profiting a lot more with higher prices, and no investor would go for it. If the investors pull their money out (which is happening, as you can see by stock prices), they lose money. Also, forfeiting profits (in this case by creating a shortage) is also a loss of money - the amount of money you COULD have made is considered an expenditure. And since they would get nothing in return, it is therefore also considered a loss. So like I said, until they can increase their yields to keep up with a higher demand (which will happen when they reduce the size of the manufacturing process) they will lose money if they go much lower.

They will do whatever they have to do to get out of this hole; even if it means giving away 280gtx's so that they can keep their superior image and try and outdo ATI on the next round.

Waaaaaay to much is unknown to really know how this round is going to play out for both companies financially but it's getting safer by the day to say ATi has the much better hand this time around.

The fact of the matter is, just like you said, ATI has the better hand at the moment. And they will be for sure able to keep hold of it until nVidia increases yields, and if they are smart, maybe even all the way until the next gen GPUs 6-8 months down the line. That's when the entire ballpark changes, and there's no way to determine who'll come out on top, yet.

Nvidia could be making $300 on every GTX280. You don't know that. Yes you have seen all the speculation about their poor yields and high costs, but that is just that, speculation.
