And the 4870 too should get better with future drivers.

Why? read the half dozen or so TRI-SLI reviews floating around the web. At best they provide up to 10% better performance in a few, select apps than a set of cards in SLI. Not to mention you need 3 of them, a TRI-SLI supported board and of course Vista. 2 x 4870's run in XP or Vista, work on any Intel board with supported slots (although X38 and X48 is preferable), and will cost either the same or less. I almost went TRI-SLI twice in the last 6 months and then held off to see what would happen with the ATI cards. Turns out it was worth the wait.

True GTX280TRISLI will beat it, but will it beat tri-fire or quad-fire 4870?

The GTX260 holds quite well in SLI against the 4870 cf, is the GTX260 a good choice at the new prices flying around.
You can get a GTX260 at zipzomfly for $259.99 now after $40 mail-in rebate $100 difference from the 260 sil to the 4870 cf, the 260s are starting to look like a good option for current sli board owners. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...dlist=celebros
