i would have guessed the 9600GSO would be three way SLI as well, or maybe even the 9600GT...

so the fact is it is a 8800GT and nothing new, so three way sli will most likely remain only to the 9800GTX and above.

well their "kicking the dead horse". Confusing people who think bigger number will be better. marketing sceme/tool/scam, nvidia has to get rid of those excess 65nm g92 chips some how.

Unfortunately you are most probably right

Then unless they sell the 9800GT for less than the 8800GT it is unlikely that we will see a price drop on the 8800GT at all, because they would rather recall them and re-brand them to sell at the same price as the 9800GT.

There was me thinking maybe the 8800GT would drop in price again

It's basically the same, well, it is the same. And that's it. No higher clocks, definitely no three-way SLI. Nvidia is offering to laser the chips with new names to help fool people into thinking it's new. Their latest batch and ATI's competition is cutting into partner's margins, and their solution is to rebrand so consumers might be fooled into buying a 'new' card.

Expreview claims that the 9800GT is pretty much an 8800GT with an extra sli connector for three-way sli.
