Well using in-direct comparisons it is. It's about the same performance as a 9800GX2. Which performs like two 8800GTS G92's. A single 8800GTS G92 performs a little better than the 8800Ultra. G92's scale better than G80's. GT200 scales a little better than G92.
Therefore GTX 280 > 8800Ultra SLI

EDIT: This review at FiringSquad shows 8800GTX SLI to outperform a single GTX 280 for the most part. Although the tests were only done in uber-high resolutions and max detail.

Ok... so there's not one shred of difference? No die shrink? No extra features? No performance boost? They're basically ripping off 8800 GT stickers and applying 9800 GT stickers?

They have been doing that a lot. I believe the 9800GTX is a rebranded 8800GTSG92 as well.

The performance difference between the two was very minimal (around 5% @ stock). But to be fair, I believe the 9800GTX boards were remakes with some slight differences (including memory chips) and OpenGL 2.0 capability, among other small changes. I can't say all this proof positive, but I recall reading about it in a review somewhere.

Haha, well that's certainly not good for the reputation.
