Default [expreview] Powercolor HD4870 GDDR5 has awesome VRM

Quote:

PowerColor is going to launch HD 4870 1GB GDDR5. We’ve got some more pics of the card.

The card uses AMD reference PCB but changed memory chips and VRM. A reference HD 4870 uses 3 phase VRM for GPU and 2 phase for memory. Powercolor uses a more better digital VRM chips, supply GPU with 4 phase digital VRM.

The cooler they used is form a Koeran company ZEROtherm. The cooler uses only two heatpipes so we still not sure if it can cool down the hot RV770 effectively.

Currently no word on price and release date, but PowerColor promises us the card will be a factory OC card.

Reference 4870

Looks cool - nice to see some more advanced/aftermarket coolers.

Never been a fan of stock GPU coolers.

So help me god if one of you high-schoolers makes some comment about "Ohhhh 1GB of ram on a 256-bit bus, what a waste . . ." I will e-slap you.

1) That argument doesn't make any sense to begin with for a whole number of reasons (which I won't get into here) and

2) This card uses DDR5 memory that runs at an effective 3600 Mhz. That means it has roughly the same throughput as GDDR3 memory with a 512-bit interface running at 1800 Mhz.

Not every card with more than 512MB of ram needs a 512-bit interface. I don't know who started this damn rumor, but it needs to end.

I wouldn't be surprised if some games are using more than 512MB of Vram these days. This might be great for higher resolutions and finally a cooler that looks like it can handle the heat of these monsters.

Wow, i was just asking when i would be seeing a 1GB 4870. I wonder how the aftermarket cooler will do. Looks good though.

I've seen tests done where Crysis was shown to use nearly 800MB @ 1900x1200 with AA/AF applied (on EVGA forums, I'll have to look for the thread.) World in Conflict, I believe, can also use upwards of 750MB in higher resolution/detail situations. Those are just a couple examples.

EDIT: Found a link @ EVGA Forums. Testing shows Crysis to use over 750MB of VRAM @ 1900x1200 and 4xAA.

well said, not to mention, that most application's will be able to utilize the memory in multiple instances, much like how a program doesnt utilize 4 gb of ram on xp pro, thought many programs at once can.

a 256 bit interface will not be an issue for todays games.
